Vastu: Frequently Asked Questions

Simple answers about Vastu traditions and how to use URVARI.

Understanding Vastu Shastra

What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian approach to arranging buildings and spaces. It considers orientation, room placement, natural light, ventilation and the five classical elements.

What are the five elements in Vastu?

The traditional five elements are Earth (Bhumi), Water (Jal), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu) and Space (Akash). Vastu traditions relate these elements to the layout and use of a building.

Why are directions important in Vastu?

Traditional Vastu assigns different functions and symbolic associations to the cardinal and intermediate directions. Recommendations depend on the plot, building layout and the school of Vastu followed.

Which direction is traditionally preferred for a kitchen?

The south-east (Agneya) is commonly associated with fire and is often preferred for kitchens in traditional Vastu. Practical safety, ventilation and local building rules must also be considered.

What is the Brahmasthan?

Brahmasthan refers to the central area of a building. Traditional guidance often recommends keeping this area relatively open, clean and uncluttered.

Does Vastu apply to apartments and upper floors?

Traditional Vastu guidance can be considered for apartments and individual floors as well as standalone houses. The available options differ because the building orientation and shared structures may be fixed.

Can tenants follow Vastu principles?

Yes. Tenants can consider non-structural changes such as furniture arrangement, lighting and keeping spaces clear, subject to their rental agreement.

Is one house-facing direction always best?

Some traditions prefer east or north-east entrances, but a suitable design also depends on site access, climate, daylight, ventilation and the full floor plan. No single orientation guarantees an outcome.

What is a Vastu Dosha?

Vastu Dosha is a traditional term for a layout or placement considered inconsistent with a particular Vastu guideline. Interpretations and proposed remedies vary among practitioners.

Can Vastu predict health, wealth or family outcomes?

Traditional sources associate certain layouts with well-being and prosperity. These are cultural and spiritual beliefs, not scientifically established predictions or substitutes for medical, financial or engineering advice.
